This assignment defines types derived from the comparison in the previous assignment, which could be useful for own future design and/or real estate development work.
Type I: Hovering architecture
Villa dall’Ava in Paris is partly hovering on slender columns. At Villa dall’Ava this is mainly an aesthetic issue, but the concept of hovering architecture could also be used when the ground bound plot size is limited but plenty of air space is available above other buildings or infrastructural works. A good example is the Las Palmas Penthouse (see image above) in Rotterdam designed by Benthem Crouwel Architects. This project is situated on top of the original Las Palmas building and hovers three meters above the original roof.
Type II: Iconic skyscrapers
The CCTV headquarters in Beijing have become an icon in architecture and engineering. Iconic projects could serve a visual propaganda for political states. A good example of another iconic skyscraper is the Burj Dubai tower which is claimed to be highest skyscraper in the world and is designed by the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. The highest point is 818 meters above ground level.
